Daou vineyard

Commercial

Overview

The Daou Vineyard is an exquisite winery that sprawls across the expansive Daou Mountain top offering patrons breathtaking views. However, adequate lighting was lacking, especially during the evening and night. To address this issue, Steve Gogatz, CEO of Innovative Light Designs, partnered with Luis Couttolenc, Garden Light LED Architectural Lighting & Design Coach, to design and install a beautiful and effective lighting system throughout the vineyard.

Challenge

The team faced several problems that needed to
be handled during Phase 1 of the project. First, the ironwork of the Main Gate Arch was invisible in low light conditions. The Second Arch and the artistic tile features in the building also needed to be illuminated for cohesion. The Patio Area includes a water feature and a large tree that required proper lighting to showcase the scenic view of the rolling hills. Slopping down from the patio’s edge is the “DAOU Life Is Beautiful” Sign, which did not have sufficient lighting and needed the ability to read the message to be improved. Lastly, the parking lot was not lit initially, and thick hedges lined the space between the asphalt and the building with large wrought iron artistic panels that needed to be illuminated.

Solution

The team installed 35 Blue and 139 White fixtures in Phase 1 of the project, utilizing Mini Spotlights, Mini Well Lights, Mini Wall Washers, P0 Path Lights, S1 Halos, S3 Saturns, V3 Spotlights, Well Lights, and Micro Maxes. These fixtures were strategically installed to address the challenges and provide adequate lighting to the property.

To tackle the puzzle of the Main Gate Arch, the team used the winery’s blue color branding to illuminate the arch, making it a beacon for visitors. These same fixtures were used on the Second Arch, with a blue hue. The detailed blue tile work at the bar/restaurant area was also emphasized with blue lights, continuing the pop of color for the blue branding theme. The red “DAOU Life Is Beautiful” sign had additional lights installed at the base, reflecting the red and creating a spectacular glow. To address the parking lot, the property agreed to cut out spaces in the hedging for the fixtures to be installed directly in front of the ironwork, enhancing the workmanship, and creating incredible shadow effects.

Results

With Innovative Light Design’s expert installation and Luis’ creative lighting design, the team won the 2023 Award of Merit for Best Commercial Lighting Project by The Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals (AOLP). Phase 1 of the Daou Vineyard project is now complete, and the team is looking forward to completing Phase 2 to light the outer exterior tables, seating, and steps that tier down to the Special Event Arch. The vineyard is now gorgeously lit, offering visitors a magnificent view of the property even in the darkest hours.

Genie Headquarters Color Branding

September 18, 2018by admin

Overview

Genie, a $4 billion dollar company, was looking for a trusted lighting vendor to illuminate the exterior of their new world headquarters building in Bothell, WA.

Challenge

They had a vision to create a branded look similar to the impossible-to-miss magenta colored T-Mobile buildings off I-405 in Bellevue. The focus would be on visual impact, functionality, and safety around the establishment for their grand opening.

Solutions

To make this vision a reality, the key was to team up with Garden Light LED to create a custom colored blue chip for the light fixtures that matches the Genie branding.

We used 67 high powered X5 spotlights to uplight the perimeter of the building. 12 Large Well Lights were installed flush in the hardscape to shine light on the pillars where we couldn’t put a spot light. To tackle the safety aspect, 8 P11 industrial path lights were used to create a safe walkway for entering and leaving the building.

Results

The client was extremely satisfied with how the lighting turned out and is considering additional lighting later this year. The vibrant custom blue perfectly represents the brand and helps the building stand out at night, accomplishing their goal of creating curb appeal, functionality, and safety. The lighting was a hit with the employees as well and even contributed to a boost in morale and company pride.

The Current Hotel

September 18, 2018by admin

Overview

The Current Hotel, Autograph Collection, by Marriott is a 10-story 4 -star, 180-room luxury waterfront hotel nestled along the serene waters of Tampa Bay. The hotel needed their lighting selections redone to illuminate dark areas that were not addressed in the original lighting plan, as well as to provide safety, keeping guests away from boundary and unsafe locations as they traverse. It was our priority to create inviting outdoor entertainment spaces and an atmosphere that was comfortable and pleasing for hotel guests.

Challenge

The original lighting throughout the Current Hotel was overly bright, causing glare to fall uncomfortably into guests’ eyes. Many of these bright fixtures were used in unnecessary locations, and a large majority were burnt out after only being installed 3 years ago—particularly the bayside and poolside decks, which created an extremely uninviting and unpleasant experience for guests.

In addition, only the front of the hotel’s exterior was illuminated, causing it to be hardly visible from the surrounding regions.

The boundary areas of the hotel had no lighting to illuminate the rocky beach and mangroves where the guests would enter. These locations are also underwater daily from the tide rolling in, so whatever fixtures selected will need to thrive under harsh conditions for decades to come.

Solutions

Garden Light LED put a lighting plan in place to enhance the space and create an elegant ambiance that guests would gravitate towards.

After structurally testing the bayside and poolside decks to ensure there would be no interference with the post-tension rods, we decided to core-drill 40 Mini Well lights in 6061 aircraft-grade stainless aluminum 2W – 25D in 3000K. These fixtures were core-drilled 3 ½” in front of the railing channels and flush-mounted to avoid traffic while providing a beautiful ambient lighting effect.

The hotel’s exterior had an upper deck that went around the perimeter of the building allowing the Garden Light LED team to utilize 35 X5 Spotlights in 6061 aircraft-grade stainless aluminum 15W – 25 D in 5000K. These fixtures were mounted 5” high on the architectural features of the building and in between each of the guest suites to prevent lighting from entering their rooms.

For the rocky feature near the bay, we used 30 Submersible Super Saturn’s in BLUE and attached them to the rock formations along the beach using our solid brass swivel. The C360 Solid Brass Super Saturn’s were selected along the mangrove area were mounted using our swivel mount and LV180’s specially engineered to increase their length to withstand the water and sand.

Results

The lighting design for the Current Hotel turned out amazing! The fixtures used for the surrounding decks invite guests in and create a captivating atmosphere. Using powerful low-voltage landscape lighting fixtures on commercial projects is not only cost effective for the client but minimizes the expense, power consumption, and liability of 120V fixtures in high-traffic locations. The blue color used to accentuate the rock formation is stunning. Guests go out of their way to venture outside just to sit on the rocks. The architectural fixtures also deserve recognition for their ability to deliver such an impressive amount of power for their small size. The Current Hotel now truly stands out from the crowd!
